Age: 280
Profession: Necromancer
Bio:
The Athanas family, while known for being wealthy, was wealthy for ways that held no degree of honor. The Athanas family were a family of thieves. Even though the family had told people that they were heirs of royalty long passed, most folk knew that this was simply not the case. The fact that the head of the family, Gryphon, would often brag of their accomplishments while drunk in the tavern didn't help much.
While most of their quests were great successes, there was one in particular that would change the family for an eternity. Gryphon had come to his family with talk of an artifact of great worth, located across the seas in Cantha. Since not much was known of the person they were stealing from, the family was at first cautions and uneasy to go on with the job. But Gryphon managed to convince his family to go on with the job with the idea that this job may be the last one they'll ever have to do if this item is as valuable as people claim.
After a long journey, Gryphon and the family arrived in Cantha, and eventually to the mansion of the owner whom owned the artifact they were seeking. Upon sneaking into what seemed to be an empty house, the family split into two groups, Gryphon and his sister Emily in one group, and the rest in the other group. During most of their jobs Emily would often stay by Gryphon's side. Being a younger sibling, she often looked up to him and felt safer with him, rather than with the rest of the family.
After a long search that was beginning to appear fruitless, there was suddenly a loud crashing noise, followed by the yelling and shouting of what Gryphon thought was the other group. Gryphon and Emily rushed in the direction that the noise was coming from. When they reached the room that the noise was coming from they found their family members on the ground, beaten and bleeding.
In the corner of the room stood a man, young but with white hair and scars across his face, smiling and chuckling slightly. In a blind rage, Gryphon ran at the man and began beating him. The man put up very little of a fight, up until Gryphon withdrew a set of daggers from his belt and plunged them into the man's mid section. Letting out a scream of pain, the man dropped to his knees, holding his stomach. This was followed by a low rumbling sound, Emily screaming, and a large creature that Gryphon couldn't make out tackle into him, knocking him out cold.
When Gryphon awoke, he found himself in the middle of a drawn out circle with strange writings scribbled within it. Being woozy at first, he couldn't quite make out the details of the room but as his head started to clear he realized the circle was surrounded by his alive, but restrained, family members and that the circle and writings were done in blood. Gryphon raised his head as he heard the sound of footsteps, it was the man he had stabbed, limping around the circle with a smirk on his face and a long staff in hand, "you've lead a very unscrupulous life, mister Athanas." Gryphon went to lunge at the man, but was held back by his own restraints, his struggling only made the man laugh, "don't waste your time... those bonds will only release by my hand." Gryphon ignored the man's statement and continued to struggle, "what do you want with us?! Just let us go!" The man smirked at Gryphon's please, "you came into my house, and tried to rob me... to kill me... you expect to get off so easily? It doesn't work that way. I am casting judgment on you, Gryphon Athanas. My judgment is an eternity of suffering until you've learned what it is to be a decent human being!"
After finishing his sentence, the man raised his staff into the air and slammed it down into the circle causing Gryphon and his family to be surrounded in a pillar of light. Gryphon looked around frantically, confused and worried, "what do you mean an eternity of suffering?!" Laughter came from outside of the pillar of light, "suffering, knowing what you've done to your family!" Suddenly, beams of light shot out from each of his family members, causing them to scream out in pain. As the light came out from his family members' bodies, the pillar of light closed in tightly around gryphon, eventually covering him. When the light finally vanished, Gryphon's family was gone. The old man, limped over to Gryphon and knelt down in front of him, just out of his restraints reach. Gryphon yelled out at the man, "where is my family?! What did you do to them?!" The man simply smiled and pressed his pointer finger Gryphon's chest, "they are bound to you. You have to live for an eternity with their suffering." Finishing his sentence, the man let out a long breath and then collapsed onto the ground, which in turn released Gryphon from his restraints. The man had bled to death.
Since the event that took place in Cantha, Gryphon has returned to Kryta and has discovered that the man was in fact not kidding when he said his families restless and suffering souls were bound to him. Along with the curse of having his families souls bound to him, he has also gained immortality but is by no means immune to pain. Over the past 250 years, he has mastered the way of necromancy in hopes that he may be able to reverse the curse that has been put on him and free his family members' souls so they can finally rest in peace.
Personality:
Before the curse, Gryphon was charismatic, arrogant, and had an adventurous spirit. The only people that he cared about in life was his family. After the curse his personality still remains in tact although he has in the past gone through brief times of Schizophrenia along with other times where depression had taken hold. At the current point in time Gryphon has managed to hold onto his sanity.
