Profession: Elementalist
Biography
Trobon grew up on his grandfather's farm with his older brother, Baldur. The two boys were raised by their mother and grandfather, but neither particularly remembered their father who had left before Trobon was born. Their mother didn't talk much about why their father had left or where he had gone, but she never seemed upset or concerned by it either. She had even named Trobon after an old family name on his father's side.
The two boys grew up fairly peacefully on the farm, learning to help take care of it from an early age and both learned how to cook from their grandfather. However, when he was very young there was a thunderstorm on the farm and Trobon saw a lightning bolt strike a tree very close to the house. It terrified Trobon and after that he couldn't help but be frightened by the sound of thunder. Their mother had been educated herself and valued it highly, so she taught both boys how to read and write and encouraged them to explore knowledge of the world around them. Both of them took to these lessons, but Trobon had personal reasons to pursue the studies.
When he was eight Trobon had discovered a box of his father's journals in the attic. He wasn't able to read much at the time in them, but as he continued learning how to read the young boy found that they were descriptions of the history of the world and the time before the great dragons had awoken. There were stories of heroes and legends, and notes that his father had taken on the nature of the dragons. He didn't know if it was curiosity that drove his father to research this or if he had been looking for a way to fight back against the dragons, but Trobon was fascinated by the ideas in the books.
However, it wasn't only histories in the journals. Some of them were manuscripts on elemental magic that dated back over two centuries, to Trobon's original namesake. Both Trobon and his brother had shown a spark of magic in them from early ages, but whereas Trobon dreamed of being able to control the power inside of him, Baldur seemed to push it away for a reason Trobon could never understand.
With the manuscripts in hand Trobon began to learn how to control the elements around him. He took an early interest, especially, in controlling water to help with the fields. During a particularly bad year on the farm Trobon and Baldur worked together, the former using his control of water and the latter using a tincture he had developed, to help stave off a blight that was killing the crops. However, the damage it had caused, combined with an increase of bandit activity had cost the family much and Baldur left the farm to find work in Divinity's Reach.
Trobon used the time after Baldur left to continue to study magic, but was starting to have trouble understanding the concepts in the books he was reading. He also was starting to feel a longing to leave home and explore what lay beyond the horizon. Is brother's visits only encouraged this feeling, as Baldur talked about working for an elementalist who owned an alchemy shop, selling potions in the city.
Even so, he was still too young to leave the farm and Trobon spent the next couple of years continuing to help on the farm, as well as exploring the nearby area. During one of these times out exploring he was surprised by the sudden onset of a thunderstorm. To escape it Trobon took shelter in a small cave, making a small fire to keep warm and trying to ignore the storm outside and keep calm. However, after waiting in the cave for a short while the young man heard a scared sound coming from outside. There hadn't been a thunderstrike in a few minutes, so Trobon slowly made his way to the cave's mouth to see what the sound was. Up on a nearby tree there was a cat, seemingly unable to get down. However, before he could leave the cave to help another lightning bolt struck nearby, paralyzing the boy.
Trobon couldn't move out of fear, but the cat's cries continued to ring in his ears and he saw in his mind the tree being struck by lightning. Unable to stand the thought any more Trobon summoned his courage and forced himself out the cave, summoning the winds behind him to move quickly towards the tree and bounding into it, grabbing the cat as quickly as he could and ran back to the shelter, ignoring the next thunderstrike and spent the next few hours in the cave shaking, not able to think.
After the storm had passed Trobon left the cave and saw the tree still standing there. Even though nothing had happened Trobon was glad he hadn't ignored the cat. And the cat seemed to appreciate it as well and quickly became his constant companion, who Trobon would name Thunder after that day.
When Trobon turned 16 he decided it was time to leave home, it being the same age Baldur had left. He wanted to see more of the world and learn more of his elemental magic, but there was more to it then that. Trobon wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and find what had happened to him. However, no matter what his path would be the same. He had to first go to Divinity's Reach after Baldur.
Trobon made his way to the city and found his brother still working for the elementalist, Cornelio Trithameus. Baldur had helped Cornelio expand his business by developing new potions and tinctures and the old elementalist gave Trobon work as a shopkeep to allow Baldur more time to work on alchemy. In exchange Cornelio paid Trobon a small stipend, that he sent back to the farm, and took the young man as an apprentice.
Over the next year Trobon would begin to learn to advance his knowledge of controlling the elements and would also help his brother in his research on alchemy. It was during this time that the two brothers began discussing their future and came up with a plan. The two of them had been educated to explore the world and they both understood the world from very different points of view. The two of them decided to start codifying the world around them by combining their talents and using both alchemical sciences and magic to understand how the natural cycles work.
It was also at this time that Cornelio decided that Trobon would best learn from using his abilities to help others and experimenting with his abilities. So the two brothers began their research into the natural world.
Personality
Trobon is naturally curious and adventurous, perhaps a little too ready to get into trouble for his own good. He is willing to push past safe limits in research in order to better understand the world around him. Unlike his brother, Trobon takes a more reckless approach to his research and one that includes a greater emphasis on drawing upon cultural traditions
He is fascinated with old stories of heroes and wants to live up to the legends of the past. He inspired by this to help others around him whenever he can. He also tends to keep a positive outlook on things, feeling like even in the darkest situations there can be light.
Even though he can be reckless Trobon still tries to maintain balance in his life. He has adopted this philosophy because of his work with the elements. The four elements are in balance in the natural cycle and Trobon tries to mimic that in his own life as much as he can. Because of this he is particularly attracted to learning more of the Canthan side of his heritage.
Trobon is still terrified by thuderstorms. He has tried to get over this by practicing the use of lightning magic, a technique that took the longest for him to learn because of his fears. However, even though he has learned to use lightning in his magic he still is frightened by the raw power that follows thunderstorms.
Possessions
Trobon carries a few important possessions with him. The most important thing he has is his set of journals. A few of these are the most important of his father's journals, but he also has a few of his own that he keeps sketches and notes on the natural world in.
In addition to his journals, Trobon keeps his magical implements on hand. When he left his home his mother gave him a set of antique Canthan daggers that had been passed through his family for many years. He uses these to channel certain elemental strikes. In the tradition of his father he has crafted his own staff and magical focus.
Finally, Trobon typically carries a few odds and ends. He has a small set of cooking utensils on him, but generally avoids taking too much to keep from having to carry too much. However, he does make room in his pack to keep his mother's lyre, that he plays regularly.
